Catventuring is a Mutually Rewarding Partnership

Updated: May 3

A catventurous lifestyle – taking our cats out with us safely on leash – is not only a wonderfully fun activity, it is also a win-win partnership between humans and cats based on trust and mutual reward.

A catventurous lifestyle is a mutually rewarding partnership, a bond that is formed and nourished between two (or more) living beings, each with their own unique personality, physical and psychological abilities, expectations and frame of reference. All of who we each are as individuals - cat and human - should be acknowledged and taken into account.

There is a word used in a biological context: mutualism. It describes a relationship between two organisms where both derive benefit. We see the relationship between a catventurer and their human as a mutualistic one, in which both parties not only benefit, they thrive and enhance each other’s wellbeing.

Each relationship is unique and both human and cat can and should be given the opportunity to evolve at their own pace. The truth is that we can only offer our cat a catventurous lifestyle that we ourselves are capable of, physically, emotionally and psychologically. We can have the best harness, leash, backpack and training for our cat but ultimately what matters is what we, as a partnership, are ready for together.

We have coined the term 'catventurous' to deliberately differentiate between what we call catventurous cats and adventure cats. Not all humans themselves are suited to adventurous lifestyles, thus cannot offer a cat one. However, almost everyone can offer their cat a catventurous lifestyle that is aligned with both their own capabilities, expectations and comfort level, as well as those of their cat.

We have the ultimate responsibility to keep both ourselves and our catventurers safe and protected, which includes understanding and respecting not only our catventurer's limits but also our own, gently pressing into them only if and when we are ready. Often, it is we the human that is learning, confidence-building and training as much as our cats!

So, each time you and your catventurer head out on catventures together, whether in your backyard or hiking mountain trails, remember that catventuring is a union borne of a secure human-cat bond, one that honours, as far as possible, the wants and needs of each of the parties at any given time.

Catventuring is a mutually-rewarding journey that we undertake together.
